Fort Lauderdale is located around 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Miami. It is Broward County’s county seat and largest city.

The economy of Fort Lauderdale has changed throughout time. The city was a popular spring break destination for college students from the 1940s until the 1980s. However, the collegiate crowd has declined in recent years, with the city increasingly drawing affluent visitors. Cruise ships and marine recreation account for a large portion of tourism revenue. A convention center with 600,000 square feet (55,742 m2) of space, including a 200,000-square-foot (18,581 m2) main exhibit hall, is located west of the beach and southeast of downtown. Conventions at the center attract about a third of the city’s 10 million annual visitors.
The downtown region, particularly around Las Olas Boulevard, has been undergoing redevelopment since 2002, and there are now numerous new hotels and high-rise condominium buildings. Although there are other communities in Broward County having commercial districts, the city’s core business district is the county’s largest.
Las Olas River House, Las Olas Grand, 110 Tower (formerly AutoNation Tower), Bank of America Plaza, One Financial Plaza, Broward Financial Center, One East Broward Boulevard, Barnett Bank Plaza, PNC Center, New River Center, One Corporate Center, SunTrust Centre, 101 Tower, and SouthTrust Tower are among the office buildings and high-rises in the area.
Foreclosure filings in the Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area grew by 127.4% from 2006 to 2007, resulting in one filing every 48 households in the quarter. For the third quarter of 2007, Fort Lauderdale is ranked fourth among the top ten metropolitan areas in terms of foreclosure filings per household.
Ft. Lauderdale Boating Industry
For yachts, Fort Lauderdale is a key manufacturing and servicing center. The boating industry employs more than 109,000 people in the county. It is also a favorite yachting vacation stop, with its many canals and proximity to the Bahamas and Caribbean. It is home port to 42,000 vessels and approximately 100 marinas and boatyards. The annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the world’s largest boat show, attracts more than 125,000 visitors each year.
Ft. Lauderdale Major Employers
AutoNation, Citrix Systems, Commcare Pharmacy, DHL Express, KEMET Corporation, SEACOR Holdings, Spirit Airlines, and National Beverage Corporation are all based in Fort Lauderdale. Tenet Healthcare, which employs 5,000 people, American Express, which employs 4,200, FirstService Residential, which employs 3,900, Motorola, which employs 3,000, and Maxim Integrated Products, which employs 2,000, are the county’s largest employers.
A commuter airline, Gulfstream International Airlines, is based in nearby Dania Beach.
