With the creation of Fort Brooke in the 19th century, Tampa became a military center. Vincente Martinez Ybor, for whom Ybor Area is named, also brought the cigar industry to the city. Following the Civil War, Tampa was formally reincorporated as a city in 1887. Tourism, health care, banking, insurance, technology, construction, and the maritime industry contribute to Tampa’s economy today. The port of the bay is the largest in the state, with an economic impact of approximately $15 billion.
The city is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area, a four-county area with a population of roughly 3.1 million people, making it the state’s second-largest MSA and the fourth largest in the Southeastern United States, behind Washington, DC, Miami, and Atlanta.

Tampa’s Business Economy
Finance, retail, healthcare, insurance, air and sea shipping, national defense, professional sports, tourism, and real estate are all important sectors of the economy in the area.
Hillsborough County alone employs an estimated 740,000 people, with that number expected to rise to 922,000 by 2015. In addition, Tampa is home to regional offices for many important enterprises, including banks and telecommunications firms.
The Tampa Convention Center, which was erected on the site of Fort Brooke, is located in Tampa, Florida.
The metropolitan area is home to several Fortune 1000 corporations, including OSI Restaurant Partners, WellCare, TECO Energy, and Raymond James Financial. Following a national trend toward urban residential development, downtown Tampa is undergoing significant growth and redevelopment. The Tampa Downtown Partnership said in April 2007 that 20 residential, hotel and mixed-use projects were in the works. However, many new downtown developments were nearing completion during a housing market recession, causing some projects to be delayed or redesigned. In contrast, some of the TDP’s 20 projects have yet to break ground and are being refinanced. Despite this, several developments have been constructed, transforming downtown into a 24-hour community rather than a 9-to-5 business zone. As a result, residents in Tampa had a 2% rent decrease in 2010. Rent had reduced by 4% across the country.
According to the Tampa Business Journal, Tampa was the second most popular city for real estate investment in 2014.
Port Tampa Bay is presently the seventh-largest in the US and the largest tonnage port in Florida, processing approximately half of all seaborne trade that flows through the state. In terms of cruise ship travel, Tampa is second only to Miami in the state. Tampa is a port of call for three cruise lines: Holland America’s MS Ryndam, Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas, and Carnival’s Inspiration and Legend, in addition to smaller regional cruise ships like Yacht Starship and SunCruz Casino.
